Hildi
My aunt Hildi – one of my father's beautiful sisters – was maid of honour at my parents' wedding. I wanted her life story, as recorded in the book “Die Frau des Metzgers” (“The Butcher's Wife”) by Susanna Schwager, to flow into my art.
Hildi's generation was shaped by wartime and its hardships – material as well as emotional. And yet there was joy in life, especially on “Samdi obe” (Saturday night), when people went out dancing.
Her elegant bearing, the beautifully pleated dress she wore as maid of honour, her fondness for “moss-rose” patterns on fabric and for fine leather shoes – I happily took these up as recurring motifs in my images. I decorated her hair with little roses, as a counterpoint to the hardships in her life.
